The adventurer’s trial controls
Keyboard and mouse

The Adventurer's Trial is a top-down pixel-art sandbox in Early Access from HY Studio, coming soon on Steam. The default PC layout keeps movement on WASD, tool actions on the mouse, and menus on the left hand so you can keep moving while you manage your inventory. These are the bindings as they appear in the current build.
Movement
- W, A, S, D
- move your adventurer in eight directions.
- Space
- dodge roll / quick dash.
- Left Shift
- sprint while held.
Combat and tools
- Left Mouse Button
- swing your tool or perform the primary attack.
- Right Mouse Button
- place blocks / use the secondary action of the selected tool.
- E
- interact with chests, harvestable resource nodes, and placed objects.
- Q
- drop or throw the currently selected item.
- 1 through 6
- select hotbar slots for tools,
- Mouse Wheel
- cycle through hotbar slots without opening the inventory.
Inventory and menu
- Tab or I
- open the inventory screen.
- B
- open the build menu.
- M
- toggle the map.
- Esc
- open the pause menu or close the current panel.
If you play solo, this layout is comfortable out of the box. In co-op sessions with up to 3 friends, however, take a minute to confirm which player is on keyboard and which is on gamepad so nobody fumbles the wrong button mid-fight.
Gamepad
The Adventurer's Trial gamepad layout follows a familiar action-adventure pattern. The right stick handles aiming while the face buttons cover interaction and item use.
- Left Stick
- move. Press the left stick to sprint.
- Right Stick
- aim attacks and tool placement.
- A
- interact / confirm.
- B
- cancel / back.
- X
- use the selected item.
- Y
- swap the active tool or item.
- Right Trigger (RT)
- primary attack or tool action.
- Left Trigger (LT)
- place block / secondary action.
- Right Bumper (RB)
- next hotbar slot.
- Left Bumper (LB)
- previous hotbar slot.
- Start
- pause menu.
- Select / View
- map or inventory, depending on the current
Gamepad controls are comfortable for relaxed mining and farming sessions, but keyboard and mouse gives you faster aiming when you are up against an epic boss.
Tips and rebinding
Before you enter the Trial, open the settings menu and check the controls tab. The Adventurer's Trial lets you remap most actions, so you can tune the layout around your play style. This matters most for combat: a good dodge binding will save you more than any weapon upgrade.
Test your bindings in a safe area before your first boss fight. If your interact key and dodge key sit on the same finger, you will accidentally open a menu or harvest a node mid-roll when panic sets in.
Rebinding checklist
- Keep dodge on a key you can hit while holding a movement key, such as Space or the Right Mouse Button.
- Bind interact to E on keyboard or A on gamepad, since you will use it constantly for mining, farming, and opening chests.
- Move the build menu to a key that will not interfere with your hotbar slots, especially if you build frequently.
- Assign your most-used tools to hotbar slots 1, 2, and 3 so you never need to cycle far mid-combat.
- In co-op, confirm each player's layout before a session so bindings do not overlap or conflict during shared-screen play.
Quick binding tips
- Sprint and dodge separately. If you keep both on the same modifier key, you will waste stamina when you meant to roll.
- Use the mouse wheel sparingly. During boss fights, cycling hotbar slots is slower than pressing a direct number key.
- Gamepad aim takes practice. When placing blocks, the right stick gives you precise aim, but you can also fine-tune by moving your character first.
- Test with friends. With up to 3 friends in co-op, a quick controls check before a boss fight is worth the sixty seconds.
Finally, remember that this is an Early Access build. Bindings may shift between updates, and the controls screen will always show the current mapping for each action. If something feels unresponsive, check the controls tab first, then your input device settings.
